MATH PUZZLER
There are 37 teams and in each round we will have one team to go on to the next round.
There will be 3 teams competing for each round. Some teams will obviously have byes (which means they get through the the next round without taking part). How many games will be played?
Including the final there were 18 games
altogether. There is a lateral way of solving this. By the end of the
contest there is one winner, so 36 teams have been knocked out. One game
knocks out two, two games knocks out 4 and so on. That means that the
games are going to half the number of teams knocked out so there are 18
games. You can also work it mathematically using the power of three, three
in the final, 27 in the quarter finals and so on. 5+9+3+1=18 (0/16) |
